Plant Care
Location:
Every houseplant has a preferred location. The right spot for your plant depends mainly on light, humidity, and water.
Sunny locations: Cacti, gerberas, and chrysanthemums, as well as palm types like the fan palm or pothos, can tolerate stronger sun exposure. Nevertheless, you should avoid direct sunlight, especially in summer.
Shady locations: Some plants like ferns, peace lilies, snake plants, kentia palms, or dragon trees manage well with less light but require higher humidity. They are therefore perfect for the bathroom.
Avoid locations above or directly next to heaters. However, if it cannot be avoided, ensure sufficient water.
Water and Humidity:
Plants regularly need fresh water. How much and when depends on the individual plant.
If the plant needs a lot of water, ensure the substrate is always moist (not wet). The finger test helps here. To do this, simply stick your finger into the soil; if some soil sticks, it's still moist. Alternatively, you can buy a moisture meter.
A plant with moderate water needs gets new water when the substrate feels dry during the finger test.
If the plant needs very little water, the substrate can remain dry for a longer period.
Some plants, like orchids, for example, appreciate an occasional soaking bath. To do this, remove the plant from its decorative pot and place it in lukewarm water until no more air bubbles are visible. Then let it air dry and place it back in the pot.
Generally, you should occasionally rinse your plants with lukewarm water in the shower to remove dust.
To increase humidity, spray the leaves with some water.
Problems:
Change location if:
Yellow leaf tips (location too cool)
Stunted growth and pale, yellowish leaves (lack of light)
Loss of flower buds (draft)
Water less if:
Brown spots on leaves or yellow, falling leaves (waterlogging)
Plant quickly loses leaves (waterlogging)
To avoid waterlogging, you can also create a gravel layer at the bottom of the pot.
Water Plants:
Water your Water Plant only sporadically and change the water
completely every 3 weeks. Ideally, use rain or mineral water. Make sure the leaves
do not touch the water and that it only reaches the base of the roots.
Extra Tip: Add a drop of liquid fertilizer when changing the water.
